Pendant plus d'un an, Julia Kristeva, psychanalyste, romancière, qui fait de son vécu de mère un combat politique pour la vie digne dans la cité des hommes et des femmes en situation de handicap, et Jean Vanier, fondateur il y a quarante-six ans de L'Arche, qui héberge des handicapés, ont échangé sous forme de lettres sur leur expérience respective. Pourquoi le handicap fait-il si peur aux gens? En quoi l'irréductible différence des handicapés moteurs, sensoriels et surtout psychiques et mentaux suscite-t-elle recul, angoisse, parfois épouvante ? Comment parvenir à changer le regard de la société sur ces êtres que notre culture de la performance, de l'excellence et de la compétition rendent les plus « étrangers » des êtres humains ? Mais ce livre permet aussi d'aborder d'autres questions, plus générales : pourquoi voulons-nous être parents ? Qu'est-ce qu'être mère ? A quoi sert la religion ? Jusqu'où ira la science ? Que peut la famille ? Et l'Etat ? Sans esquive, cet échange –la réflexion analytique et laïque de Julia Kristeva venant en contrepoint de celle de Jean Vanier, nourrie de foi chrétienne –interpelle notre vision de l'existence et, à travers celle-ci, interroge notre humanité.

De Belgische filosoof Guido Vanheeswijck bespreekt in dit boek de historisch-filosofische oorsprong van een actief pluralistische houding. In zijn boek nuanceert hij de gangbare opvatting die de oorsprong van de moderne westerse tijd in de 17e eeuw dateert. Hij noemt deze de tweede renaissance, de rationele en wetenschappelijk moderne. Zij is de basis voor het passieve pluralisme. In navolging van Burckhardt, Kundera en Toulmin situeert hij een eeuw daarvoor een eerste, literaire en humanistische renaissance. Het is de tijd waarin de Lof der Zotheid van Erasmus en Utopia van Thomas More ontstonden. Deze humanisten leerden elkaar in Antwerpen, door toedoen van Pieter Gillis, kennen. Onder deze filosofen werd een open discussie over geloofszaken gepropageerd. Door het bloedvergieten tijdens de godsdienstoorlogen ontstond er echter een passieve tolerantie waarbij de 'laatste vragen' geleidelijk uit het publieke discours verdwenen. In een democratie behoort er echter ook dialoog te zijn over fundamentele waarden en overtuigingen. Hiervoor kan inspiratie geput worden uit de eerste renaissance van humanisten als Erasmus en More.

Tolerantie is een van kernwaarden van de Westerse beschaving, maar als exportproduct is het minder succesvol gebleken. En ook de interne werkbaarheid van het principe staat ter discussie. Beseffen we zelf nog wel wat tolerantie precies inhoudt? Kunnen we de grenzen van het begrip nog afbakenen? Of zijn die vloeibaar geworden? De oude wereld was nooit een uniform blok, maar alle Europese landen en de westers gebleven kolonies dragen nog steeds de vruchten van hun grieks-christelijke geesteshouding. De tolerantie voor onderlinge verschillen is na een erg moeilijk groeiproces ook deel van onze Westerse identiteit geworden. Onder convergerende culturen moet men het standpunt verdedigen dat de gemeenschappelijke wortels meer binden, dan de gegroeide individuele verschillen. Maar de omstandigheden zijn veranderd. Verscheidene factoren bedreigen het oude Europa: de demografische teruggang, de acute identiteitscrisis en de massale inwijking van niet-Europese culturen. Kunnen verschillende etnische, ideologische en religieuze groepen in Europa ook in de toekomst vredevol samen leven of wordt het een naast elkaar leven, of erger? En hoe zijn soms diametraal tegengestelde visies op politiek, economie en waarden te verzoenen? De antwoorden op die vragen worden vertroebeld door een verkeerd begrip van tolerantie die als het ware de geseculariseerde versie van de erfzonde geworden is.
